The Detail: Cost, Time and Effort
As explored in our four-part DIY ceramic coating series, ceramic coating doesn’t begin with the coating itself. Safe washing, decontamination and paint correction all play an important role in creating the ideal surface for the coating to bond to.
Assuming all of that preparation has already been completed, let’s focus on the final stage: applying the ceramic coating itself. This is where many enthusiasts begin asking themselves the same question: Should I apply the coating myself or leave it to a professional?
The answer largely comes down to three things: cost, time and effort.

Cost
One of the biggest reasons people choose the DIY route is to save money.
A consumer-grade ceramic coating can cost anywhere from a few dozen euros to a couple of hundred, depending on the brand, durability and size of the bottle. Compared to a professional ceramic coating package, that’s a significant saving.
However, it’s important to remember that the coating itself is only part of the equation. You’ll also need applicator blocks, suede cloths, quality microfibre towels, nitrile gloves, a panel preparation spray and, ideally, a clean, enclosed space where the coating can be applied and allowed to cure without contamination.
Professional installations naturally cost more, but that price reflects more than just the product being applied. It covers the controlled working environment, professional equipment, experience and, perhaps most importantly, the peace of mind that comes from knowing the coating has been installed correctly.
Time
Applying a ceramic coating isn’t difficult, but it is methodical.
Each panel needs to be coated individually, allowed to flash, levelled with microfibre towels and carefully inspected before moving on to the next section. Depending on the size of the vehicle and the coating being used, the application itself can take anywhere from two to six hours.
Once the coating has been applied, the work isn’t quite over. Most ceramic coatings require a curing period during which the vehicle should be protected from water, dust and adverse weather. Some manufacturers recommend keeping the vehicle indoors for at least twelve to twenty-four hours, while full curing can take several days.
When you choose a professional detailer, all of this is handled for you. You simply collect your vehicle once the coating has been applied and cured according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
Effort
This is where the biggest difference lies.
DIY ceramic coatings have become increasingly user-friendly over the years, but they still demand patience and attention to detail. Applying too much product, leaving it on for too long before levelling, or missing a high spot can leave visible streaks that are difficult to remove once the coating cures.
Unlike waxes or sealants, ceramic coatings don’t offer much room for error. If application mistakes are left to harden, correcting them often means polishing the affected area and reapplying the coating.
Professional detailers perform this process every day. They understand how different coatings behave under varying temperatures and humidity levels, how quickly each product flashes and how to identify high spots before they become permanent.
For someone coating a vehicle for the first time, that’s a learning curve worth considering.
DIY or Professional?
If you enjoy working on your own car and appreciate learning new skills, applying a ceramic coating yourself can be incredibly rewarding. You’ll gain valuable experience, save on labour costs and enjoy the satisfaction of knowing you completed the job yourself.
On the other hand, if you’re looking for absolute consistency, want to minimise risk or simply don’t have several uninterrupted hours to dedicate to the process, professional installation offers excellent value. You’re paying not only for the coating, but also for the expertise that ensures it performs exactly as intended.
